In 2008, Dominique Perrault described himself in eleven words: School. Break. Challenge. Empty. Wall. Earth. Land art. Site. Place. Happiness. And finally, Mesh, a flexible, structured material whose very essence is to be present yet invisible.
It is a material that is both rigorous and poetic, virtual and present, and which architects have used in the past as a means of delimiting a geographical area, either to protect it or to accommodate it, as well as to channel natural or artificial light. It is this same mesh that Dominique Perrault and Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost have adapted, manipulated, circumvented and transplanted inside their lamps to create the thousands of exceptional and powerful lights that illuminate the Bibliothèque nationale de France, day and night.
Reluctant to advertise in the media, his conceptual hedonism is accompanied by infectious enthusiasm and a healthy dose of fun. Dominique Perrault's signature is barely visible on his products. So it's quite an event when he uses it, along with Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost's, on the IN THE TUBE and IN THE SUN collections.
In his own way, it's a way of domesticating and refining the raw power of the industrial, of filtering the source to make it into something thoughtful and considered, resulting in a comfortable, soft and sophisticated object. "This transfer of universe is nothing new. Today's domestic interior is constantly penetrated by the industrial, which has long since lost its aura of being a nasty, noisy thing, separated from the rest of the world. Today, it's normal to use these components, which fit naturally into the world of design".
