Isamu Noguchi

Designer

Isamu Noguchi was born in Los Angeles in 1904, the son of the Japanese poet Yone Noguchi and the American writer Leonie Gilmour. After studying at Columbia University and the Leonardo da Vinci Art School, he founded his first studio and was awarded a Guggenheim Foundation grant in 1927. Noguchi became Constantin Brancusi's assistant in Paris, exhibited his first work in New York, then explored the art of the brush in China and worked with clay in Japan. His multi-faceted work, ranging from sculpture to the design of theatre sets, furniture and public spaces, reflects his involvement in different cultural milieus. Isamu Noguchi died in New York in 1988.
