‘What if we modernised the traditional English club chair?’ It was this question, posed by Charles Eames, that initiated a long creative process aimed at reinventing a classic in comfort.
Their ambition was to design an armchair that offered unparalleled comfort, combined with impeccable quality in both materials and workmanship. Drawing on the expertise they had accumulated during their previous projects, Charles and Ray Eames created an armchair that was lighter, more elegant and more contemporary than traditional models — while still meeting their unrivalled standards of comfort. When it was launched in 1956, the Lounge Chair was the first armchair to feature a swivel base, a feature that contributed greatly to its popularity.
Now considered one of the great classics of 20th-century furniture design, this iconic armchair is still produced by Vitra using virtually unchanged manufacturing processes, guaranteeing exceptional craftsmanship. Available in two sizes, it comes in a wide range of combinations of leather or fabric upholstery, wooden shells and bases.
Now available with new veneers and countless combination possibilities, the Lounge Chair by Charles & Ray Eames (1956) continues to set the standard for modern design. Samples of veneers and upholstery are available at our showrooms in Puidoux or Porrentruy.

- Upholstery & Covering: Removable cushions in recyclable polyurethane V-Foam. Removable covers available in leather or fabric.
- Armrests: Recyclable V-Foam polyurethane foam with removable leather or fabric covers. Connected to the shells via rubber and metal shock mounts.
- Base: Five-star swivel base. Base and backrest bracket in die-cast aluminium.
