Find out more about this product
A timeless symbol of modern design, the Cesca chair embodies the heritage of the Bauhaus and the innovative vision of Marcel Breuer. Introduced by Knoll in 1968, following the acquisition of the Gavina Group, it celebrates the architect's iconic creations. Inspired by Bauhaus principles and innovations in materials, the Cesca chair stands out for its remarkable simplicity. Its linearity is harmoniously balanced by subtle curves.
In this version, the seat has a padded cushion upholstered in fabric or leather, providing added comfort, while the canework, which is only machine-made for this model, ensures a uniform, meticulous finish.
Although Marcel Breuer designed the original Cesca chair in 1928, shortly after leaving the Bauhaus, this upholstered version remains deeply linked to the design principles and material innovation developed within this design school. Breuer was inspired by the tubular steel of his bicycle, a light and robust material that enabled him to design modern and functional furniture, such as the famous Wassily chair and the Laccio table.
Originally known as B32, the chair was renamed ‘Cesca’ by Dino Gavina in homage to Breuer's daughter Francesca. With its tubular steel frame and comfortable upholstered seat, the Cesca chair became a symbol of the modernist movement, combining structure, comfort and aesthetics.
Today, this chair remains an icon of modern design, perfectly integrating the Bauhaus heritage into contemporary interiors.
Available finishes for the tubular frame:
Chrome-plated steel: Provides a lasting shine, true to the original 1920s design.
Ultra-matt epoxy paint: Available in a range of colours, this contemporary finish gives a modern look while preserving the elegance of the original design.
Manufacturing process :
Machine caning: Uses industrially woven cane rolls, guaranteeing regular, even braiding. The cane leaf is fixed to the wooden frame, giving a uniform, neat finish.
Each upholstered Cesca chair in the Breuer for Knoll International collection bears the KnollStudio logo and Marcel Breuer's signature, ensuring the authenticity and quality of each piece.
