Find out more about this product
Designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925, the Wassily Lounge Chair is one of the most emblematic creations of modernist design.
While an apprentice at the Bauhaus, Breuer began experimenting with tubular steel, seeking to create a more transparent and lightweight chair. Inspired by the frame of a bicycle and influenced by the constructivist theories of the De Stijl movement, Breuer reduced the classic form of the club chair to its elementary lines and planes, giving rise to a revolutionary piece.
The Wassily Lounge Chair is made to Breuer's original specifications, with a polished chrome-plated tubular steel structure, with no visible welds, which brings a timeless elegance and visual lightness to this iconic work. In 2024, Knoll enriched this icon by introducing coloured finishes for the structure, as part of the ‘Nuovi Colori Bauhaus’ collection. These new options bring a bold modernity while respecting the innovative spirit of the Bauhaus, where primary colours played a central role in exploring visual perception.
The chair offers a wide choice of finishes, including leather, canvas or hide(s), available in a variety of colours, from classic hues to more contemporary shades. For an even more distinctive touch, additional options are available to adapt the chair to different interior styles. Four removable transparent polyamide glides, supplied with the chair, ensure optimum use on hard floors.
Each Wassily Lounge Chair has the KnollStudio logo and Marcel Breuer's signature engraved on the base, guaranteeing the authenticity and heritage of the design. Recognised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1968 and classified as a ‘work of art’ in Germany in 1982, this chair is much more than just a piece of furniture. It is a timeless work that continues to influence the world of design.
By integrating the Wassily armchair into your space, you are choosing a timeless piece of design that, in a world in search of sustainability and meaning, is part of a new era of conscious consumption. Passed down from generation to generation, this modernist icon has regained its relevance as an object that is both functional and symbolic, valuing heritage and durability.
