The manufacturing process for the Utzon JU1 suspension metal shades combines two specialised techniques: deep drawing and turning. Deep drawing forms metal parts by plastic deformation of the material, using a punch to press the metal into a mould. This method is ideal for creating complex shapes and large depths without joints or welds, ensuring a smooth, uniform finish.
Turning, on the other hand, is a forming process where the metal is fixed on a lathe and shaped by rotation. This technique is used to refine details and create the precise contours needed for the lampshade's distinctive silhouette.
