In the mid-1950s, Alexander Girard designed the interior of the legendary Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. Combining the Miller family's prestigious art collection with folk art and a wide variety of custom designs, he gave the bright, open rooms a warm, intimate feel. The heart of the house was a sunken living room, known as the "conversation pit." It was furnished with sofas decorated with many colorful and seasonally changing cushions and had, at its center, the focal point of the salon: the Flower Table. The legendary Miller House is now owned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and can be visited. The Flower Table, which was made especially for Xenia Miller, the lady of the house, is still there. The brass table was given a new top in 1977 and is still in its original location. In close collaboration with the Girard family, Vitra developed a version of the table in epoxy-finished steel for mass production. It is available in various colors and is also suitable for outdoor use. Along with his colleagues Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, the designer and architect Alexander Girard was one of the leading figures in American post-war design. His work focused primarily on textile design, but Girard was also admired for his graphic art as well as his work as a furniture designer, set designer and interior designer.
