Find out more about this product
‘What if we modernised the traditional English club chair?’ It was this question, posed by Charles Eames, that sparked a long creative process aimed at reinventing a classic in comfort.
The Eameses wanted to design a chair that offered unparalleled comfort, combined with impeccable quality in both materials and workmanship. Drawing on the expertise they had accumulated through their projects, they created an armchair that was lighter, more elegant and more contemporary than traditional models — while maintaining an unrivalled level of comfort. When it went on sale in 1956, the Lounge Chair was the first armchair to feature a swivel base, a feature that contributed greatly to its popularity.
Now considered one of the great classics of 20th-century furniture design, this iconic armchair is still produced by Vitra using virtually unchanged manufacturing processes, guaranteeing exceptional craftsmanship. Available in two sizes, it comes in a wide range of combinations of leather or fabric upholstery, wooden shells and bases. Its matching Ottoman harmoniously completes the ensemble and reinforces the experience of total comfort sought by the Eameses.
Now available with new veneers and countless combination possibilities, the Lounge Chair & Ottoman by Charles & Ray Eames continues to set the standard for modern design. Samples of the veneers and upholstery are available in our showrooms in Puidoux or Porrentruy.
Other features:
- Seat and back shells: moulded plywood with decorative lacquered veneer.
- Upholstery & Covering: removable cushions in recyclable polyurethane V-Foam; removable leather or fabric covers.
- Armrests: V-Foam polyurethane foam with removable covers; connected to the shells via rubber and metal shock mounts.
- Base: five-star swivel base for the armchair and four-star fixed base for the ottoman. Base and backrest bracket in die-cast aluminium.
Wood origin: chestnut (Central Europe), European cherry (Central Europe), Santos rosewood (Bolivia, certified sustainable) or European black walnut (South-Eastern and Central Europe).
