The designer Alexander Girard is one of the most important figures in post-war American design history, along with his colleagues George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. Girard's work focused primarily on textile design, but he was also admired for his graphic art as well as for his work as a furniture designer, scenographer and interior designer. Girard brought an attractive and playful dimension to 20th century design that was missing from the austere aesthetics of classical modernism.
