Louis Poulsen's design team developed the Toldbod family of lights using the reflector of the PH Ellipse, Poul Henningsen's latest street lamp concept, as inspiration for the distribution of light. It first appeared in 1982 with the Toldbod 290 family of outdoor lamps. Its success led to the launch of the Toldbod Glass indoor pendant lamps. Metal pendant lights follow, supplemented by four larger versions in 2019. The Toldbod suspension directs most of the light downward, true to Poul Henningsen's philosophy of shaping light to illuminate spaces without dazzling people. The white painted frosted interior of the conical shade helps to produce an even illumination, perfect for task lighting and the overall mood of the room. Louis Poulsen originally based his Toldbod suspension on the principle that the simpler a design is, the more versatile it is. While the soft, precise shape of the Toldbod works well on its own, this model is perfect for a row or cluster arrangement, with a single color or mixed palette.
