Designed by René Herbst in the late 1920s, the Sandows lounge chair is part of the designer's ongoing research into industrial furniture and modern comfort. Reissued today by Petite Friture in keeping with the original models and materials, it illustrates a rigorous and visionary approach to design, where structure, function and use constitute the very essence of form.

The chrome-plated tubular steel structure creates a clean, graphic line, René Herbst's signature style. The seat and backrest are made of sandows — elastic tensioners covered in fabric — which support the body while providing flexibility and visual lightness. This system, which is both structural and aesthetic, creates an ergonomic, comfortable and durable seat. The black lacquered oak veneer armrests introduce a tactile and warm dimension, creating a subtle contrast with the industrial rigour of the steel and bungee cords.

Architect, interior designer, scenographer and committed avant-garde figure, René Herbst (1891–1982) was one of the leaders of the French modern movement. Co-founder of the Union des Artistes Modernes in 1929 alongside Charlotte Perriand and Robert Mallet-Stevens, he played an active role in shifting French design from ornamentation to industry. An advocate of mass production and the use of industrial materials for the benefit of the greatest number, he developed a holistic approach to space, in which furniture is fully integrated into interior architecture.

Made in Italy, the Sandows lounge chair is now at home in contemporary interiors. With its graphic lines, clear structure and balance between industrial materials and wooden elements, it embodies a design that is demanding, functional and timeless. It is part of the Sandows collection, which brings together three iconic pieces by René Herbst: the N°212 chair, the Sandows armchair and the N°114 chaise longue.
