Designed in 1927 by René Herbst, the Sandows No. 212 chair is one of the founding pieces of modern French furniture. Reissued today by Petite Friture with scrupulous respect for the original models and materials, it embodies a radical approach to design, where function takes precedence over ornamentation and industry becomes an aesthetic language in its own right.

Its chrome-plated tubular steel structure creates a clear, rigorous and graphic line. The seat and backrest are made of bungee cords — elastic tensioners covered with fabric — used as the only supporting elements. This bold use of industrial materials, René Herbst's signature, gives the chair a minimalist appearance and a great visual lightness. The flexible and resistant elastic cords naturally mould to the body and guarantee lasting ergonomic comfort.

Architect, interior designer, scenographer and committed avant-garde figure, René Herbst (1891–1982) was one of the leaders of the French modern movement. Co-founder of the Union des Artistes Modernes in 1929 alongside Charlotte Perriand and Robert Mallet-Stevens, he played an active role in shifting French design from ornamentation to industry. Nicknamed ‘the Man of Steel’, he advocated mass production and the use of industrial materials for the benefit of the greatest number. A pioneer of metal furniture in France, he developed a holistic approach to space at a very early stage, in which furniture was seen as a functional and aesthetic element of a coherent whole.

Manufactured in Italy, the Sandows N°212 chair is now a natural fit for contemporary interiors. With its simple structure, clean lines and carefully chosen materials, it embodies a design that is demanding, comfortable and timeless. A true modernist manifesto, it stands out as a contemporary classic, faithful to the visionary spirit of René Herbst and the editorial line of Petite Friture.
