The Capitol Complex Armchair is an iconic reissue by Cassina, directly inspired by the furniture designed for the buildings of the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, created by Le Corbusier in 1951 to accompany India's independence and its move towards modernity.
The site's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016 has revived interest in this major architectural ensemble and the furniture that was an integral part of it. Found in particular in the High Court, Secretariat and Assembly spaces, these lounge chairs were distinguished by their generous upholstery, designed for comfort, and their clear architectural structure. They reflect the characteristic design principle of Chandigarh furniture, with V-shaped supports, a formal signature associated with Pierre Jeanneret.
The exposed wooden elements – the base, connecting crossbars and final junction of the armrests with the backrest – give the piece a rigorous structure, while the upholstery almost entirely envelops the armrests, creating a rounded shape that is soft to the touch. The separate seat and back cushions reinforce the impression of immediate comfort, in an expression that is simple, elegant and perfectly balanced.
In addition to the historic teak version, Cassina now offers this armchair in natural oak, black-stained oak or dark walnut-stained oak, allowing it to blend harmoniously into contemporary or heritage interiors.
A true tribute to Pierre Jeanneret, the Capitol Complex Armchair embodies a vision of furniture where architecture, comfort and simplicity interact perfectly, making this armchair an iconic piece of 20th-century design that is still highly relevant today.
