Design: Mario Bellini (1966), reissued by HAY

A true icon of 1960s Italian design, Amanta was created by Milanese designer Mario Bellini, a major figure of the post-war period who broke down the boundaries between architecture, design and industrial art. Designed in 1966, this modular armchair surprises with its bold form: a low, sculptural shell seems to float above generous cushions, in a radical spirit that contrasts with the Scandinavian minimalism that was dominant at the time. Inspired by Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair, Amanta revisits the idea of an airy seat resting on a chrome-plated metal base.

Almost 60 years later, Danish design house HAY has created a contemporary reissue that combines respect for the original design with a commitment to sustainability. The shell is now made from 99% post-consumer recycled ABS plastic and features 94% biomass foam cushions designed for ergonomic comfort. Each element is designed to be dismantled and recycled, in line with today's eco-friendly approach.

Available in 1, 2, 3 or 4 modules, Amanta lends itself to an infinite number of configurations, in fabric or leather, in a range of vibrant or understated colours. At the crossroads of design history and sustainable innovation, this lounge chair is a centrepiece that adapts equally well to domestic spaces and contemporary public interiors.
