The Light Bulb Series by James Wines is a conceptual and artistic collection that revisits the traditional light bulb to create unique and intriguing design objects. James Wines, known for his interdisciplinary artistic approach to architecture, sculpture and design, has collaborated with Foscarini to create this series.
Each piece explores concepts such as inversion, deconstruction and the fusion of nature and industrial objects. The series, designed for art and design lovers, is structured around five distinct variations, in which the classic light bulb is deconstructed or transformed to tell a new story:
- White Light: A faithful replica of the classic bulb, celebrating its iconic silhouette.
- Black Light: An inversion where the light comes from the base, while the bulb remains opaque.
- Candle Light: A fusion of the candle and the light bulb, bringing together two historic light sources.
- Melting Light: A light bulb that appears to melt, capturing a moment of transformation.
- Plant Light: A light bulb that becomes a mini terrarium, symbolising the coexistence of the artificial and the natural.
This collection was showcased at Milan Design Week 2018, in an immersive installation entitled ‘Reverse Room’ . The scenography disrupted visitors' spatial reference points by bringing together furniture and objects from unusual angles, playing on perception and conventions. James Wines' work aims to challenge family customs and aesthetics, transforming everyday objects into provocative artistic elements.
James Wines and Foscarini have been collaborating since the 1990s, sharing a common vision for innovation and experimentation.
