N-EI" - Japanese for "shade, shadow, nuance". The art of lighting has a conceptual and technological heritage at Miyake Design Studio, dating back to 2010, when Issey Miyake and his research and development team called Reality Lab, introduced 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE. This new process was developed using a mathematical program with 3D geometric principles by Jun Mitani. 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE is an extremely ingenious way to make garments, and a process that provides another example of the directions that research into innovative textile technologies can take. The project comes from the intersection of creativity and mathematics, resulting in garments that can be folded flat and become 3D shapes, from a single piece of fabric. As a Reality Lab. explored 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE's potential in areas beyond apparel, a natural extension of the process was lighting products. IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE was born out of a collaboration with Artemide combining their lighting expertise with the Lab's innovative approach to materials and design. The IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting collection was co-developed and manufactured by Artemide. It is a collection of floor, table and pendant lamps. Each shade is created using 2 or 3D mathematical principles, where light and shadow alternate harmoniously. Miyake's unique folding technology creates both sculptural shapes and sufficient strength. The structure of the recycled material, combined with additional surface treatment, allows these shades to retain their shape perfectly without the need for internal framing, and to be reshaped as needed.
