"Atelier" is a French word. According to Wikipedia, it refers to "the workspace of a creative person". One thing is certain: the ateliertisch table is aptly named. It is placed in the centre of the room and allows you to work all around it. It was designed for horgenglarus in 1953 by the Swiss architect and designer Hans Bellmann. After several decades, it is back in the range of the Glarus factory.
Although the ateliertisch was already in the catalogues of the 50s and 60s, its refined design was probably too avant-garde for the time. This is actually rather surprising, as it is extremely practical. A fact endorsed by the designer Bellman, who liked to work on a table he had designed himself.
Bellmann's aim was to create a very light table. The basic idea of the former Bauhaus student took on a new form: the table had to be easy to dismantle. A project that he managed to come up with.
The table can be easily disassembled and reassembled when moving house, thanks to Bellmann's typical construction method and the quality of the fastening system.
The final product has hardly changed from his 1953 sketch. The solid wood frame is inserted with an offset at the corners and forms a so-called counterfeit. Thus, the table is not only aesthetically pleasing, but the corners are also more robust and the top is more stable.
The table top is slightly thinner than the frame, allowing cross braces to be inserted to better anchor the table legs. The ateliertisch thus retains its lightness without losing its stability.
The table top rests on matt black tubular steel legs. The legs, which are flared towards the floor, join a metal plate underneath the table. The two metal plates are attached to the cross table top with four screws. The table is fitted with a total of eight screws, which makes it easy to separate the tabletop from the frame; an ideal companion for a lifetime of mobility.
The table top is available in oak, walnut and beech, natural, black or varnished. The dimensions of the table are based on Le Corbusier's Modulor, a system of proportions based on the dimensions of the human body. The table is therefore available in different lengths of 183 cm, 226 cm and 296 cm and in widths of 86 cm and 113 cm (the latter only for the 296 cm table). It is 75 cm high. A portrait of Le Corbusier and his Modulor dimensions is depicted on a 10 Swiss franc banknote. So if you want to check the dimensions of your ateliertisch, just take a look at your 10 franc note.
