Designed by René Herbst in the late 1920s, the Sandows N°114 chaise longue is the culmination of the designer's research into industrial furniture and modern comfort. Reissued today by Petite Friture in keeping with the original models and materials, it embodies a radical and functional vision of seating, where structure and use take precedence over any form of ornamentation.

Its chrome-plated tubular steel structure creates a clean, rigorous line, characteristic of René Herbst's modernist vocabulary. The seat and reclining backrest are made of sandows — elastic tensioners covered with fabric — which provide flexible and ergonomic support, naturally moulding to the body. The reclining backrest can be adjusted to ten different positions using a screw system, allowing the chaise longue to be adapted to every moment of relaxation. This system, which is both structural and aesthetic, gives the chaise longue a great visual lightness, while ensuring lasting comfort. The black lacquered oak veneer armrests introduce a tactile and warm dimension, while the black leather mattress and headrest enhance comfort and emphasise the functional elegance of the whole.

Architect, decorator, scenographer and committed avant-garde figure, René Herbst (1891–1982) was one of the leaders of the French modern movement. Co-founder of the Union des Artistes Modernes in 1929 alongside Charlotte Perriand and Robert Mallet-Stevens, he played an active role in shifting French design from ornamentation to industry. A pioneer of metal furniture in France, he developed a holistic approach to space, considering furniture to be an integral part of interior architecture.

Manufactured in Italy, the Sandows N°114 chaise longue is now a natural fit for contemporary interiors. With its pure lines, clear structure and balance between industrial materials and comfort, it embodies a design that is demanding, functional and timeless.
