Modular Imagination is one of the last projects developed by Virgil Abloh in collaboration with Cassina. Initiated in 2020, the project explores modularity as a tool for active participation in shaping living spaces. The concept is based on a geometric unit available in two sizes, designed to be used individually or combined to accommodate different functions and configurations.

Beneath its monolithic matte-black appearance lies a soft surface that allows the element to fulfil multiple roles. Used on its own or combined with additional modules, it can function as seating, a coffee table, an ottoman or a bench. A dedicated connecting system enables the stacking of elements by locking the orange feet into the module below, creating a wide range of possibilities for both residential and public environments.

Inspired by principles of functionality, expressiveness and essential forms, Modular Imagination translates these values into a contemporary vision centred on versatility. Developed together with Cassina LAB, the project also incorporates consideration for the product’s end of life, with components designed to be separated more easily for recovery and recycling. Added to the Cassina collection following Virgil Abloh’s passing in 2021, it stands as a lasting expression of his design vision.
