Find out more about this product
In their legendary Eames House, Charles and Ray Eames surrounded themselves with their own creations and a vast collection of folk art, as well as small objects found on their travels, in nature and in everyday life. If they collected objects, it had to do with aspects of design and form, as Ray explained: "We never collected anything as collectors, but because something came out of the object that made it seem like a good idea to look at it. The Eames organized and decorated their living space with great seriousness and joy, making the Eames House a collage Î Material: solid alder wood, hand-painted. Always changing, a reflection of their life.
One of the dominant features of the Eames collection was a huge wooden whale more than two meters long, an anonymous work of North American folk art. Charles and Ray Eames were particularly passionate about this painted object: it occupied a permanent place in the Eames Office and also appeared in photo shoots - such as the first pictures of the Lounge Chair. Vitra's smaller scale reproduction of the Eames House Whale is made of alder wood and painted by hand.
