Find out more about this product

AKARI lamps, which means light in Japanese, diffuse a soft and solar light. Handmade from Washi paper, these lamps are handcrafted in Japan from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. The paper is then glued to a flexible frame made of bamboo strips, which gives each lamp its light and delicate appearance.
Designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951, the Akari lamps are reminiscent of traditional Japanese lanterns and are the result of a true artisanal work perpetuated since the 7th century. Considered a universal talent, Isamu Noguchi's work is marked by a sculptural style dedicated to an organic formal language that will have a lasting influence on the design of the 1950s.
The 1A models are the first models designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951. Its shape modernizes the traditional Japanese lanterns that inspired it. These tripod lights are different from the other AKARI by their structure: two bamboo rings hold the washi paper on both sides, for a more traditional design.
