Initially named LC4, the infinitely adjustable chaise longue, now simply called "4" and produced by Cassina from 1965 onwards, embodies the quintessence of relaxation. This masterpiece, designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand in 1928, was born of the designers' ambition to place people at the heart of their concerns, harmonising form and function to offer optimal rest. Geometric purity and physicality are balanced in a form that naturally follows the lines of the human body.
The seat is made from sustainable materials: polyester fibre padding and a headrest made from recycled PET wadding, now attached with Velcro for easy disassembly and recycling. The chair can be adjusted by means of a trivalent chrome-plated steel or matt black rocker, whose stability is enhanced by rubber tubes that surround the base, allowing an ideal tilt for relaxing.
As well as its innovative design, the "4" has left its mark on the history of modern design, appearing in countless films, exhibitions and private collections. It illustrates the enduring influence of its designers, whose individual contributions have merged to create a symbol of timeless comfort and elegance. The "4" is not just a piece of furniture, but a work of art that continues to set the standard for luxurious, environmentally conscious furniture design.
This icon of modernist design is regularly highlighted for its commitment to sustainability and its responsiveness to contemporary ecological concerns, affirming its role in promoting a more responsible industry. By juxtaposing the '4' with other 20th century masterpieces, we can appreciate its unique and revolutionary character, which continues to influence designers and consumers around the world.
