LAR Eames Plastic Armchair

"The Plastic Chairs by Charles and Ray Eames are among the major creations in the history of furniture. After their initial presentation at the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in 1948, the chairs were launched on the market in 1950 in an armchair version (shell A) and a simpler chair version (shell S) - they were thus the first plastic chairs to be mass-produced. With the debut of their Plastic Chairs, Charles and Ray Eames introduced a new typology of furniture that has since become widespread: the multifunctional chair, whose shell can be combined with a variety of different legs. As early as 1950, they introduced a series of bases dedicated to different sitting positions, including the LAR (Lounge Height Armchair Rod Base) low-profile version. The LAR seems to have been one of Charles and Ray's favourite models: it can be seen in many old photographs of the legendary Eames House at Pacific Palisades, both inside and out. They also reveal the lightness of the chair and the ease with which it can be moved. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the Plastic Chair LAR can also be used in smaller interiors. The wide range of colours available for the shell, upholstery fabric and base can be matched to various styles and types of furnishings. The steel wire frame, which achieves maximum stability with a minimum of material, has acquired a charming nickname on the market in a short time due to its unusual shape: Cat's Cradle - in reference to the children's string game. Thanks to the organic shape of this classic armchair, LAR is a remarkable solitary piece of furniture but can also be combined with many types of sofas to form an attractive contrast. Especially in its fully upholstered version, LAR offers long-lasting comfort, making this modestly sized armchair an excellent seating choice for any living space.

Seat shell: dyed polypropylene. All models are available with a seat cushion (screwed to the shell) without full upholstery.
